One year ago!

"I am the LORD< the God of all flesh.  Is anything impossible for Me?"  Jer 32:27 NKJV

It has been one year ago today and as we look back over the past year, we are constantly reminded of the amazing power of our Almighty Physician and LORD.  He has richly blessed us over the past year in so many ways.
When the doctors told me that Nathan would most likely not make it through his disease and truama, and that if he did, they didn't know how long it would be for, or if he did live, if he  would ever walk again I didn't know where to turn but upwards.  And as the hours and days passed my Dad use to point upwards to remind me of where to turn at all times.
As I write this all I can say is how AWESOME our God is!

At this time Nathan has come further then the doctors ever expected him to come ever.  His strength in his arms and leg, is beyond what they ever expected. His internal organs are working better then ever expected and Nathan has remainded emotionally strong - to the disblief of the Psych team.  Even though we have told all his doctors (and nurses) time and again that it is only because of our Almighty Physician  they still are full of disblief.

Next week Nathan is returning to work at Sheehans truck Center - one day  a week.  this is a very exciting time for us.  -When Nate was in hospital he told his co -workers, docs and nurses that he would be doing this and not one of us thought this would be possible, but D.V it will be possible.  Once again we see His almighty hand at work.

At this time we would like to say thankyou to all our family, friends, communion of saints, coworkers and all others who have not only supported us financially, physically but most important who have supported us with their prayers.
Thank you

At this time we also ask that you pray for the DeBruin family.  Their 'Papa" is at the present time in serious condition in the Burn Trauma unit (where Nathan was) Pray for the docs, nurses and all others involved in his care.
May our Heavenly Father surround them with all they stand in need of as a family.

With many thanks and prayers

"I lift my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from?  My help comes from the LORD the Maker of heaven and earth."
                                                                                                                                                        Ps 121:1-2

This will be our final post, so I will give you all a quick update as to what has all happened in the past 8  months.
I can't believe it was 8 months ago already that our lives were changed in many ways.  When Nathan was diagnosed with flesh eating disease, we were all uncertain as to what was going to happen, and how our lives were going to change.  The only thing that did not change was our Heavenly Father's unfailing love and faithfulness, and in this alone we were comforted and certain that our future was completely in His hands.  How thankful we are to rest in this knowledge.
After 99 days in hospital, Nathan returned home to us, his wife and children.  It was a difficult and very busy transition, but with time, we all adjusted and began a "new normal"  It was only a few months later, and we recieved the phone call, it was time for Nate to return to hospital and begin the "final" leg (no pun intended) of our journey.  April 8th Nate was admitted to the Hamilton Rehab Center to begin relearning to walk.  This was also the most exciting part, to see Nathana walk again was something we had originally been told would not happen for approx 1 year after the amputation and here we were not even 6 months later and Nathan was learning to walk.  Our Heavenly Father certainly was in full control of all things.
After only 5 weeks in hospital Nathan returned home, walking!! We were told, we were done with physio, done with hospital stays (D.V.) and all we had left were doctors appointments.  Nathan would now have to learn to walk in the real world, where the ground is uneven, crowds of people don't move out of the way for you and children (inculding his own) will run right in front of you and even take out a cane.
It has been 6 weeks since discharge, and since then we have seen Nate's plastic surgeon Dr. Cooper.  Dr. Cooper has been with us since the very first surgery and has treated us with respect and as people not a number.  He is an excellent surgeon who truly saw that,( as he put it) "a greater power is watching over you."  Yes, our Almighty and Heavenly Father has guided Dr. Cooper and the many other doctors and nurses and medical staff.  It was our Master Physician who healed Nate!  We will not be seeing Dr. Cooper again as he is moving out east, and as Nate has healed so well that he most likely will not need to see a plastic surgeon in the near future.
As for the other doctors that we must yet visit; Dr. Grad, (prosthetic doctor) we will be seeing regularily.  Nathan will also be seeing his dermatologist as well and next year Nate will once again visit his cardiologist.  But at this time we only see a doctor about once a month, and soon hopefully less.
Now to what Nathan has been doing over the past 6 weeks.  Well if you know Nate, then you know it takes  a lot to keep him down.  The first week home, Nate took it easy, but since then he started by driving the lawn mower and in the past week he has been driving tractor.  He has also been back in his shop fixing friends and family vehicles - keeping himself very busy.  Nate has had to learn how to do things again, things that were so easy before.  He has had to learn how to safely maneuver his way around his shop and onto a tractor.  Nate also has had to relearn how to swim, as he cannot wear his prosthetic in the water -  it just took one dive in the pool and two cute kids and Nate is back to having fun in the water.
Our lives have definately changed, but it has been all for the glory of God.  He has graciously carried us through these past 8 months and we know that He will continue to carry us through the rest of our lives.  We have been richly blessed with family who truly care and have helped us so much in the past months.  We have been blessed with friends who have steped up and done so many many things for us.  We have been blessed with the communion of saints - in our own congregation we have truly felt their love and care, and the communion world wide who prayed and assisted us in so many ways as well.  We have been also blessed with others, such as those at  Sheehan's truck center, parts stores, and other places who have helped us in so many waysll.   To each and every one of you - THANK YOU.  We are truly thankful for each prayer to our Heavenly Father, for He has heard them all.  We are thankful for every other thing that has been done for us as well.  How gracious and awesome our Father is to provide us with so much.
May each of you, trust in Him alone.  He will guide you each day and He does have a perfect plan worked out for each of you.  His Word prevails.
With thankful hearts and christian love.

"Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men."  Psalm 66:5

How awesome our God is; He has graciously allowed Nate the ability to walk again.  It has been 4  weeks now in physio and the progress has been unbelieveable.  Nate went from wheelchair bound to walking without canes in 4 weeks.  In the medical community Nate is considered a huge"success" story, but in our Church community (and to the world)  God has shown us His awesome power and ability to do what He wills when He wills.

Nate is doing very well, and hopefully will be coming home for good at the end of next week.  There are many things Nate would love to be able to do right away, but he needs time and patience to re-learn how to do many tasks we deem "simple".   At this point it appears Nate's "new" leg  (prosthetic) is out walking his "old" leg (right) - what I mean is that due to all the work (surgery) they had to do on that leg, the right knee is causing pain and discomfort especially when going from sitting to standing or standing to sitting.  Hopefully with time this too will correct itself and the knee will become much stronger.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers.  Please continue to pray for Nathan, that he may find strength and comfort in his Heavenly Father even in the difficult and discouraging days.  May our Heavenly Father continue to bless each of you as He has so richly blessed us.

"Praise the LORD.  Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever."  Psalm 106:1

Since Nathan came home early from hospital this week, (due to a conference for the physio and doctors)  we decieded that may be he should write the next blog, so the following is written by Nate.

Well its been two weeks since starting inpatient rehab (but only 7 days due to holidays) and I have to admit that after the first very frustrating day progress has been remarkable.  They have not only taught me to walk in the paralell bars but have graduated me to walking with two canes , then one , then none!  They have also been teaching me how to tackle things like curbs, stairs, and uneven and soft surfaces as well as how to stand again after a fall.  This weekend they allowed me to take the leg home - I had to promise them I would use two canes when I am walking.  Walking with a prostetic requires an incredible amount of energy and after walking only a short distance I find myself getting tired very quickly.  Its going  to take a long time to build up endurance but with much patience and prayer the Lord willing I will be able to walk well again.  In the days ahead they will teach me to master walking without the aid of canes because as of now they are simply wobbly baby steps, then move on to learn how to carry objects and walk - but all in due time!

Thank you for your continued prayers and support.  May our Heavenly Father bless each of you as He has so richly blessed us.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

Today Nathan started physio with his prosthetic.  What a work out!! Wearing an above knee prosthetic requires a lot of energy and strength to learn to walk on it.  It was absolutly incredible to see Nathan walking on his prosthetic not once but mulitple times today.  This physio is EXTREMEMLY intensive, frustrating (and painful)  when it doesn't go just right, unfortunately there will be many days of frustration as each time Nathan accomplishes one goal the next one will be more difficult.  Please continue to pray for strength and encouragment as Nathan spends these days in hospital and in physio.

"When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other.  Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future."  Ecclesiastes 7:14

Nathan has officially been admitted to hospital again.  He is at the Hamilton Rehab Center for intensive physio, and training to walk on his prosthetic.  Nate will be there for approx 4-6 weeks, depending on how well things go.  Nate and I are not looking forward to this time in hospital again, but are thankful that Nate is not sick this time, he will be coming home for weekends  and that this time is hopefully the last big step to walking and starting our lives without hospital every week.    This too is in the hands of our Heavenly Father and He alone knows the course Nate must now take.

If you would like to visit Nate, he is on the second floor of the rehab building which is attached to the Hamilton General Hospital, the center is located on Wellington Ave. between Barton and Burlington St.  The official area is 2B- south amputee and spinal cord floor, room 216 bed 2 (which is the bed by the door.)  Nate has physio twice a day at 10:30 and 2:00 for an hour at a time, and needs total concentration for these, meaning that the physio team and we request that you do not visit during physio.  These times are not consistent for every day as Nate also has classes to go to and appointments with different teams (OT, Docs, prosthetic team and scar control team) If you would like to visit please contact Nate before you come, and he will let you know the best time to visit.

At this time we would like to thank you for your continued support with prayers, encouragment and donations. These all have been such a blessing to us, and we pray that we may use our blessings to the honour and glory of our Heavenly Father.  Many things have changed in our lives and continue to change.  From more house renos that need to be made to make things easier for Nate, to a new vehicle suited for him to drive for when he returns to work, but in all these things we must use what we have been given to honour Him first.  We pray that our Father will continue to bless your lives as He has so richly blessed ours.

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.  I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.  I say; My purpose will stand and I will do all that I please.”  Isaiah 46: 9-10
A number of things have happened in the past couple of weeks that we thought you might find interesting....on March 30th Nathan stood on his prosthetic for the very first time.  It was an incredible moment, to see – Nathan standing, both feet on the ground and not having to hold on.  Unfortunately the socket (part of the prosthetic that goes over Nate’s left limb (a.k.a “stumpy”) was much too large so Nate was unable to take any steps. Then a week and a half later (April 8th) Nate not only stood on his prosthetic but he took his first steps – they were not smooth or perfect but they were steps and it was a very exciting moment... unfortunately the socket still did not fit properly, and so Nate was unable to walk in it for long, another appointment was made for further fitting.
On Monday April 11, Nathan and I along with the kids went back to Hamilton for another fitting.  This time the kids were able to see Daddy’s prosthetic and watch Dad walk, the smiles on their faces were enough to make us all grin.  Dad was walking, they were so used to Dad wheeling that it was really incredible to see him walking.  Once again the socket still didn’t fit perfectly and they needed to do some more alterations...with the “promise” that the prosthetic will be ready for physio on Mon April 18th.  (Just for your own info, it is very normal for the socket not to fit the first time around and will need a lot of alterations.  The prosthetic itself will also need alterations for height, weight bearing, foot placement etc. )   This being said, yes Nathan is going to be admitted to hospital for 4-6 weeks starting on Friday April 15th.  He will thankfully be able to be home for the weekends and holidays but has to stay over from Monday – Friday.  When we get further details as to his room, the times when he will be having physio and CANNOT have visitors, and his schedule in general we will post the info.
At this time I would like to thank all of our wonderful friends, family and our Church community as a whole for all the driving you have done for us.  Nathan’s physio was three times a week in Hamilton for two hours and over the past two months I have had to drive only a few times.  We have been richly blessed and continually cared for.  Our Heavenly Father knows what we need when we need it most.  To Him be all Honour, Thanks and Praise.
With thankful hearts; Nathan, Aileen, Taryn and Aiden Diek

"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails." Prvb 19:21

Monday (Feb 28) Nate was casted for the liner for his prosthetic, it was at this time that we were notified that it would be approx 3 weeks before Nate's prosthetic would come in. Because of the shape, size and all the skin grafts on Nate's left limb - he needs a completely custom built liner (made only in California) and prosthetic (suitable for a  very active "young" man)  this means it will take the approx 3 weeks before Nate's new leg arrives.  Monday afternoon it was decided that Nate might as well be discharged home, continue out patient physio and when his prosthetic arrives, return for the 4-6 week in patient program.   So at time of writting, we are returning to Hamilton for another appointment, book a number more appointments and find out what hopefully will happen.

In all this we are once again reminded of who is in control, our LORD, and Heavenly Father has plans for us and for all that will happen.

Please continue to remember us in your prayers and we thank you for the continued support, love and prayers you continue to show to us.  May our Father bless each of you as He has so richly blessed us.

"But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations." Ps 33:11

This week we once again have seen how the LORD's plans are awesome and perfect.  On Thursday (Feb 24) we received a phone call requesting Nathan come to the Regional Rehab Center to be admitted for the prosthetic rehab program- a 4-6 week program in which Nate will be getting his prosthetic leg.  So Friday we made the trek back to Hamilton to admit Nate to hospital once again.  He was seen by doctors, nurses, physio therapists and the prosthetic team. Once assessed by all the teams and met a whole new group of people, Nate was given his first weekend pass home.  Monday morning we have to return and Nate will start the week with casting his left limb for a prosthetic.  It takes approxiamtely a week for them to make the prosthetic, and so in the mean time they will be starting Nate on a physio program to prepare him for walking.  This means he will be having physio twice a day every day and when the prosthetic comes these twice day physio sessions will become longer and more intense.
Hopefully this will be Nate's last long term hospital stay, thankfully he will be given weekend passes home.

If you would like to visit Nate he will be at the Regional Rehab Center on Wellington, (attached to the General Hospital) Nate is on the second floor, in the spinal cord/amputee ward.  This is considered 2B south, Nate is in room 217, bed 1.  PLEASE contact Nate before visiting as he will be having many physio sessions and many doctor appointments and prosthetic appointments.  If you come and Nate is in physio or seeing someone in his room, please do not disturb him. If you are not sure how to contact him you can call or email us to get further info (if emailing please give me time to answer) Visiting hours are from 11 am - 8 pm.

Please continue to remember us in your prayer especially Nate as this session in hospital will probably include some pain with wearing a prosthetic, and much time away from family.

Thank you for your continued support, encouragement and prayers.
